Victorian Jewelry: VJ120

NATURE’S WONDER ( Arts and Crafts Jewelry Peacock Eye Earrings ): The Arts & Crafts Movement. (c. 1890-1920) produced a fresh approach to jewelry. These large Sterling Silver Leaf and “Peacock Eye” earrings are a perfect example of the rebellion against the excesses of Victorian ornamentation and the return to the simplicity of nature. The peacock eye motif was associated with the Aesthetic Movement that included the Pre-Raphaelites of the art world. The practitioners of the Arts & Crafts Movement were revivals of a sort, but they re-interpreted the past. They rebelled against the excesses of Victorian ornamentation. In jewelry the intrinsic values of the materials was of secondary importance to design and workmanship. These dazzling blue and green “peacock eyes” are hand crafted foiled glass. Superb, stylized, large Sterling Silver leaves make a bold statement at the top of these earrings. (c. 1890-1920) Perfect double-sided bezel set Peacock Eyes shimmer with life at the center and a silver bullet pointed drop completes this fully articulated pair of earrings. The original fine Sterling shepherd’s hooks are long and graceful. The back of the leaves are marked “ Sterling ”. It seems to me that there is a touch of Danish designer, Georg Jensen, influence in this design. The curved silver work sets off the glowing Peacock Eyes. Supremely elegant and sleek, they look as modern as anything produced today, but carry with them the history of the last century. Condition: Excellent. Size: Total length from top of ear wire 2 3/4”, 3/4” wide.
