GLORIOUS GARNET BUTTERFLY ( Victorian Jewelry Garnet Brooch ): Glittering garnets dance across the surface of this multi-layered Victorian Butterfly Brooch. (c. 1880-90) The deep wine red garnets are faceted to refract sheer brilliance and their radiance and glow are simply luscious. The butterfly design is both feminine and flattering. (The butterfly symbolizes the soul in resurrection.) Each of the winged and tail portions of this antique brooch is composed of multi-leveled tiers of sparkling varied size garnets. Unlike many flat garnet figurals, this brooch is quite grand in scale and remarkable in quality. Take a look at the construction of this piece from the back. The setting is gold filled; the garnets are claw set and I am certain that the antennae are later replacements. Although the enhanced C clasp closure and pin back appear original, there is another connection in the center that may indicate that this butterfly could have been worn as a hair ornament. The garnets are all original and the brooch is probably of English origin. This captivating garnet butterfly brooch shimmers and sparkles as it lands on your shoulder. Condition: Excellent. Size: 2 high, 2 1/8 wide, 1/4 deep.
