BUTTERFLIES AND BUBBLES ( Vintage Jewelry Butterfly Wing Pendant ): A unique type of vintage jewelry, which appears to be attracting a growing number of collectors, originated in England. (c. 1923) However, its primary component, the wings of the Morpho Butterfly, came from South America. This whimsical design depicts an Angel perched on a draped column, blowing large bubbles from a thin bubble pipe. You can see the soap bubble dish in front of him sitting on a table top. How perfectly delightful! Several British firms made these art deco design pieces set in Sterling Silver. The design consists of a white sulfide bas-relief, backed with an iridescent blue butterfly wing under a domed glass cover. It is impossible to catch the beauty of the iridescence in a static photo, since the color changes as the piece moves. On the swag below the figure the letters “RS” are etched in white sulfide. The sterling back is marked “Morpho” and has a British hallmark. A wonderful piece of history! Condition: Very good. Areas of the iridescent blue wing have become brown, but it only gives the pendant more character. Size: 1 3/4”, 1” wide. Chain is 20” long with a spring ring catch.
