Victorian Jewelry: VJ019

HIGHLAND HIGHLIGHT: This Victorian Silver Highland shoulder brooch is a most unusual scalloped lozenge shape. It is set with shaped, design cut banded gray agates and a large faceted Cairngorm. Originally found in the Cairngorm Mountain Range in Scotland, Cairngorm is a variety of whisky colored quartz. The setting is chased silver. The brooch dates from around 1860. In the second half of the 19th Century, Queen Victoria’s love for Scotland, its people and its customs, helped stimulate the fashion for Scottish jewelry. This piece has no silver marks, but that was not unusual in those days, to avoid the stamp duty in England. There is a replacement C clasp pin back. The brooch construction is hollowware, which looks heavy, but is light. Condition: Excellent. No chips to any of the stones. A few small dents on the back. 2" wide, 1 3/8" high, center faceted stone 3/4" x 1/2".
