FAUX MEISSEN PUG MOM & PUP ( Antique Victorian Porcelain Pug Dog from Lena Horne Collection ): When my wife saw me holding this pug she said: “What a cute Meissen pug!” Yes, she is an old porcelain hand painted pug with cropped ears, a blue collar and a crossed swords trademark. And the pose of the pug mom with her baby peeking out from under her is that of a Meissen model. But I’m afraid she’s only a “Faux” Meissen Pug. The hallmark is that of the French company, Samson & Sons. However, what makes this pug even more interesting is that she comes from Lena Horne's pug collection! The dealer I purchased her from was a Majolica dealer. He had purchased several pugs from her collection at auction. He only wanted her Majolica Pug but had to purchase a small batch. He was selling the others, including this one, for very reasonable prices. The Majolica was beyond my budget. But - what the heck – this is a lovely Pug Mom & Pup and I’ve never seen another like her. She’s a good example of how porcelain factories all over Europe tried to emulate the famous (and expensive) Meissen Porcelains before hallmark laws became stricter in the late 1800's. So she’ll make a very interesting addition to your collection of pugs.
