QUEEN OF THE PUGS ( Vintage Mottahedeh Conte & Boehme Reproduction Porcelain Pug Dog ): If you've seen pictures of famous pug collections, such as that of Sylvia Sydney, you've undoubtedly seen one, or a pair, of these large beauties with black faces, fancy collars and either white or tan bodies. I recently purchased a pair for our own personal collection. It was only then that I learned they were made by the Mottahedeh Company, the most famous maker of antique porcelain reproductions in the USA. Rafi and Mildred Mottahedeh married and formed their company in 1929 and were mainly collectors for their first few decades – amassing not only European porcelains, but the largest private collection of Chinese export porcelain in the world! By the late 1950's they began making reproductions of their own collections. In the '60's and '70's they became the most important source of museum reproductions and their pieces, made mainly in Portugal, now decorate the White House along with many famous institutions and homes of the rich and famous. So, what about our pug? I recently handled the largest of the famous Conte & Boehme male pugs and discovered my Mottahedeh male was an exact copy except for the decoration and being lighter in weight (see photo of both males and photos with soda cans). So I'm sure that this pug, with her gold and teal trimmed collar and bow and five golden bells, is the exact replica of the largest of the female Conte & Boehme pugs. She has a Mottahedeh sticker on her belly and was probably made in the 1960's or '70's. Join the rich and famous and add this Queen of the Pugs to your collection!
