MALE MATTHEWS PUG ( Vintage Basil Matthews Male Pug Dog ): Those of you who have visited our Pug Pages in the past know that I have handled a number of what I call “female” Basil Matthews Pugs, those seated on a cushion or pillow. However the standing Male Matthews Pugs are very rare. I have seen exactly four in my life – two like this one I am offering and two slightly smaller glazed ones. I sold one of the latter and am now offering one of the larger ones. He differs from all the other Matthews Pugs in that he is quite realistic with much more heavily carved features and only a light glaze. This handsome fellow is my very favorite of all the Basil Matthews Pugs. Sadly, both of my pugs of this style have “boo-boos”. The one I'm keeping has a repaired leg. This one has a chipped right ear. I have painted the area of the chip with black enamel so it looks pretty good. Matthews started producing his fanciful little figures in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in 1946. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, along with several other honors. Now deceased (1985), his little beauties have become harder to find and even more valuable. He has the “Basil Matthews” signature on his belly. A rare and wonderful addition to any pug collection!

Condition: Good. Chipped right ear. Defect taken into account in price.
Size: 3 1/2” high, 4” long, 1 1/2” wide.
