PRINCELY PUG PAIR ( Vintage Chelsea Reproduction Porcelain Pug Dogs ): I would love to tell you that these are real Chelsea Pugs from their “Gold Anchor Period” (1758-1770). Both pugs do bear a Gold Anchor hallmark, Chelsea’s most forged hallmark, and they are a great example of the early English Porcelain Pug style. However, I feel certain that these are high quality reproductions as opposed to forgeries. They are made of hard paste with a shiny glaze, not the soft paste with a softer glaze typical of early Chelsea pieces. The dealer I purchased them from said they were made by the French company, Samson, and he may well have been correct. Samson, Edmé et Cie (1845-1969) specialized in reproductions of famous pieces made by such companies as Meissen, Sèvres, Chelsea, and Derby. Samson did not set out to produce copies with the intention to deceive and claimed that all reproductions would be distinctly marked to avoid confusion with the originals. However, they were not all marked and many of their products were so good that they were passed off as originals. In any event they have become very collectable in and of themselves. These are nicely molded, hand painted and seated on cobalt blue platforms. They sport blue collars with gold studs, gold pendants in front and what look like golden disc clasps or buckles in back. I have handled pugs of this model before, but have never had the opportunity to obtain a pair to present to you. That makes these guys special.
