Pug Figurines: PP540

DON’T YOU LOVE ME? (Vintage Basil Matthews Porcelain Pug Dog ): Basil Matthews was a master in making and hand decorating small porcelain animal figurines – often with a touch of whimsy. Amazingly, each of Matthews’ Pugs has its own expression and says something different to me. This one has an especially poignant expression. I feel she is asking me to please pay attention to her. She feels neglected and wants some affection. (To me most of his seated pugs are female and his rare standing pugs are male.) Since all his figurines were all hand decorated, no two are exactly alike, so yours will be unique. He started producing his fanciful little figures in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, in 1946. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, along with several other honors. Now deceased (1985), his little beauties have become harder to find and even more valuable. No pug collection is complete without one. You can see he has signed the piece and she has her original felt on the bottom along with the original sticker.

Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks.
Size: 2 5/8” high, base 2” by 1 5/8”.
