Native American Jewelry: NA165

FROM BEAR TO BEAUTY ( Vintage Native American Indian Bear Claw Pendant ): When I first saw this I thought it was a large Victorian Tiger Claw from India, though I had never seen one decorated with fur. I salivated at finding the rare pendant – as opposed to brooch – and at the size and perfection of the claw. When the dealer told me it was a Bear Claw decorated with the original bear fur I was at first disappointed. Then I thought – what a find! I've collected Native American jewelry most of my life and never seen one like this. Our Indians are famous for copying ideas for their jewelry and translating them into beautiful native pieces. This Sterling Silver cap could easily be that of a Tiger Claw from the Raj period, but adding the fur coat is ingenious! So now I am thrilled to be able to offer my wonderful find to you. The Sterling Silver cap and bale are decorated with stampwork and long “teeth” pointing downward. The bale is large enough for a significant silver chain or neck wire. The fur covers both sides and the front of the claw leaving the back bear. What a gift for some lucky man or woman! Bears portray strength to Native Americans. Wear this as your luck charm.

Condition: Excellent. It appears that the inside of the claw has been sanded or smoothed. Chain is not included.
Size: Claw 1 1/4” long, 1 5/8” wide, 3/8” deep. Total length 1 5/8”.
