LIBERTY QUARTERS - NAVAJO STYLE ( Native American Navajo Indian Necklace ): Definitely old, this Vintage Silver Coin Navajo Necklace uses United States quarters as the raw material for its decoration. Eight liberty quarters have been dome shaped and strung between silver beads. The quarters date from 1927, 1929 and 1930 with many of them worn so smooth that the dates are unreadable. Navajo silversmiths utilized Mexican and United States coins as ornamentation in some of their earliest efforts. By 1890 the U. S. government discouraged their defacing money by using it for jewelry, but the practice continued until about 1940. The “naja” pendant is sand cast with a stylized cross and hands - Christian symbols. It has a bezel set turquoise stone with a wire twist surround. Dating this necklace is difficult, certainly the quarters speak for themselves. The silver beads are not made from coins. It is strung on waxed thread and the hook and eye closure is attached by the old style of burning the waxed thread closed. Maker’s mark “M” on each quarter. Probably circa 1940.

Condition: Excellent. I have not cleaned it much to retain its original patina and condition. Size: Length is 23” not counting closure. Naja is 2” high, 2 1/4” wide.
