HANDS OF UNITY & AFFECTION ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Hand Pin / Brooch ): Here is a highly detailed and charming example of a Victorian “hand” mourning brooch. (c. 1860-70) This piece, made of Vulcanite, shows a hand holding a basket full of leaves and fruit or berries. The elaborate lace cuff and beaded bracelet are especially fine details. Notice the curve of the fingers holding the basket – the tiny fingernails are visible on the fingers. Hands holding flowers and wreaths were common motifs in jewelry, lithography and cemetery iconography. They represented the popular sentiments associated with affection and love. A sweet and timeless expression of love and loss. The pin back has a C clasp. I wear two hands at a time or mix a black hand with an Ivory hand for a striking visual effect. Condition: Excellent. A few light scratches – they are antiques, too. Size: 2 1/8” wide, 1 1/8” high, 3/8” deep.
