Mourning Jewelry: MJ064

ETERNAL MARITAL LOVE ( Georgian Mourning Jewelry Brooch ): During the late 18th and 19th Centuries, snakes were symbolically associated with marital love. This early English Mourning Brooch (probably late Georgian) has a setting that features a snake swallowing its tail – symbolic of eternity. (c. 1810-20) Executed in 9KT rose gold, the snake has a wonderful scale pattern and a finely detailed head. The plaited blonde hair is visible from both the front and the back. (If you hold it up to the light you can see right through the glass.) Sometimes called a “lace” pin, this petite brooch can also be worn as a pendant. The pin back has its original C clasp. Snake memorial jewelry is highly desirable and a favorite with collectors. Wear several of these pins at once for a striking look. A dainty symbol of eternal love and devotion. Condition: Excellent. Size: 1 1/4” wide, 3/4” high.
