Mourning Jewelry: MJ059

THE ANGEL OF THE NIGHT ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Locket ): This charming Victorian porcelain mourning locket shows the winged figure of “Night” (Nyx) carrying her two sleeping children (c. 1860-80) Taken from a marble relief by Bertel Thorvaldsen, executed in 1815, it remained a favorite subject throughout the 19th Century. As executed on this Antique Mourning Locket, it appears that the under coat is white and the matte black paint has been applied over the white, leaving this painted image. Matte black was used for the first stages of mourning during the Victorian era. The hinged window and original cover reveal a photo of a young child. The window closes tightly and the bale is black enamel, befitting a mourning locket. A haunting image of enduring appeal. Condition: The front is excellent. The back window portion shows some wear. Size: 1 3/4” long, 1 1/4” wide, 1/4” deep.
