Mourning Jewelry: MJ057

BASIC BLACK BROOCH ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Vulcanite/Gutta Percha Brooch ): This beautifully constructed Antique Vulcanite Brooch once decorated the collar of a fashionable Mid-Victorian lady. (c. 1860-75) Black jewelry had become so popular that it was worn by all stylish women, whether in mourning or not. Basic black has retained its sophistication and allure right to this very day. This matte black Vulcanite brooch is comprised of 3 separate teardrop shapes suspended from a diamond design – the two inner drops swing freely. The large outer teardrop has a decorative “saw tooth” edging. The pin back has a C clasp closure. Matte black (no shine) was particularly suitable for the first stage of Victorian mourning customs. I was fortunate to purchase both pieces of this sleek set. See MJ056 (just above) for the matching earrings. It would be wonderful to keep this set intact after all these years. Condition: Excellent. It is black with no brownish cast. Size: 2 1/4” long, 1 1/2” wide. Diamond shape extends 1/4”.
