HANDMADE HAIRWORK KEEPSAKE ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Brooch ): Preserving the hair of loved ones has been a sentimental custom for centuries. This majestic Victorian Hair Brooch (c. 1870) is probably an example of homemade hairwork produced by an amateur. The loops of blond hair, unstudied and unpretentious, speak clearly of the creator’s emotions and feelings. Most of the ladies “fancy work” manuals gave instructions for making hairwork pieces. In 1876 Mrs. C. S. Jones wrote: “the ability to arrange and secure each strand of the sacred treasure becomes an accomplishment truly valuable and worthy of all the patience and skill required in its performance.” This very personal brooch has a very lush gilt setting that compliments the hair loop design. The center section swivels to reveal a photo of a beloved gentleman. The closure is a C clasp. Condition: Excellent. Slight wear on the gilt surface, but not visible to the naked eye. Size: 2 1/2” high, 1 3/4” wide, 3/8” deep.
