A PICTURE OF GRIEF ( Victorian Mourning Hairwork Picture ): This beautifully executed French hairwork memorial picture has a striking three-dimensional effect. The entire picture is made of hair with sepia and watercolor accents. The ground is comprised of dissolved hairwork - the fabulous willow tree and foliage are done in almost feathery cut-work. Even the tree trunk and the grave site enclosure are hair! The depth and dimension of this scene takes your breath away. The hairwork is done on glass and has an oval domed glass covering. On the tomb is the inscription "A. L. Chevalier, 30 juin, 1854". The frame is a dark wood, possibly Ebony. On the back of the picture is the original French artist label. Rich with symbolism and tender remembrance, this is a piece to treasure. Condition: Excellent. Hairwork oval is perfect. The gold metal inner rim shows slight wear. Frame has a few dings. Nothing to detract from this superior hairwork memorial. Size: Frame is 5 1/2" high, 4 7/8" wide, 1/2" thick. Interior glass oval is 3" high, 2 3/8" wide.
