HIDDEN GRIEF - HAIRWORK ON REVERSE ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Agate Brooch ): Rich and shimmering, this oval cabochon of Bullís Eye Agate demonstrates the elegance of agate as used in Victorian mourning jewelry. (c. 1860) This fine brooch displays the agate on the front, but hidden on the reverse side is a delicate hairwork memorial under glass. Two color hair plumes on milk glass are accented with pearls and gold wire twists. The 18 KT oval mounting is decorated with applied gold balls and fine rope twists around the border. President Lincolnís wife, Mary Todd, was often photographed in a spectacular set of bullís eye agate which included a circular head piece. The C clasp, elongated pin stem and safety chain ring are all original. The brooch comes in its original leather box. The bottom of the box has the maker "McFarlane & Sons, Glasgow" impressed in Gilt and an impressed hallmark of a Scottish thistle. Of course, having the original box enhances the value of this piece of history. Condition: Excellent. No chips. Size: 1 1/2" width, 1 1/8" high, 3/8" deep.
