Mourning Jewelry: MJ031

HOLD FAST, NEVER FORGET ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Locket ): Lockets hold a very special place in all Victorian Jewelry collections. This special enameled locket (c. 1840 - 1870) illustrates three of Victorianís special passions, all lovingly merged in one design. The hand is a recurring romantic symbol, the cross for loss and the blue enamel floral wreath conveys "Forget-Me-Not" in the language of flowers. The delicate rose and blue enamel with the cross accented in black, combine to form a striking image of loss and remembrance. Fine engraving decorates the gold-filled front and an engine turned design on the back contains a central plaque where an initial could be added. This locket opens from the back and still retains its original lining fabric and both inserts and covers. The hinge is tight and the locket closes securely. This striking and colorful piece is a favorite of mine. Condition: Excellent. No enamel loss and only slight wear. Original bale and ring are still in place. Size: 1 3/8" high, 1 1/8" wide, 1/4" thick.
