Mourning Jewelry: MJ013

PLUMES OF JET ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Jet Brooch ): Prince of Wales plumes of palette worked auburn hair swirl gracefully in this lovely oval Victorian brooch (c. 1840 - 1860). Originally made for the deepest stage of mourning, the setting of this hair work memento is carved from a solid piece of jet. The center has been recessed to hold the hair compartment and beveled around the edge with a textured background and highly polished scrollwork and boarder edges. This kind of jet design work is hard to find. The hair work is covered by a replacement celluloid insert. The pin back is brass with the original C clasp and a replacement pin stem. Condition: Very good. The silver base metal surrounding the hair is abraded, but the photo makes it appear very exaggerated. It is not that obvious to the eye. Perfect jet and perfect hair work. Total size: 2 1/2" wide, 2" high. Hair compartment: 1 3/8" wide, 1 1/4" high.
