FAIR-HAIRED FIND ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Brooch ): This dramatic Victorian swivel brooch (c 1860 - 1880) would turn anyone’s head. Set on a milk-glass base enhanced with gold filigree wires and four tiny half pearls, the single sweeping curl of palette-worked hair is probably the momento of a beloved child. Few adults possessed hair of a color this pale and so fine in texture. The back swivel compartment is empty of the portrait it may once have contained, but the glass cover remains and the swivel mechanism is in excellent working condition. The thick pinchbeck loops of the setting give the effect of enormous chain links. The tube hinge and pinstem have been replaced, but the C clasp is original. Condition: Excellent. Original glass, minimal wear to the setting, one small filigree wire moves, the hair is all firmly attached and in perfect condition. 2 1/4" high, 1 3/4" wide.
