Mourning Jewelry: MJ002

Back

BASIC BLACK ( Victorian Mourning Jewelry Jet Brooch ): What a wonderful Victorian Jet Brooch. Queen Victoria’s rules of mourning etiquette made Jet the material of choice. An entire industry grew up around the mining and carving of Jet, a fossilized coal. Because it was so fashionable, black jewelry was worn by women who were not in mourning. This huge "endless knot" brooch interlaces a ribbon-like effect into an oval formed by unending loops. A base metal covers the entire back of the brooch with a C clasp fastener. Condition: Excellent. One small abrasion and a few age related scratches. 2 3/4" wide, 2" high, 5/8" thick.
