DAWN USHERING IN THE DAY ( Edwardian Jewelry Shell Cameo Brooch ): This hand carved pale pink shell Antique Cameo Brooch is a most unusual depiction of Aurora, the Roman goddess of Dawn, and Nyx, the goddess of Night. (c. 1900-10) These two companion goddesses are frequently linked. In this fanciful Edwardian carving, Dawn, crowned with roses, lifts her face – eyes open – to greet the pale pink dawn; while Nyx is shown, head drooping with her eyes sealed in sleep. Her night time reign finished, while Dawn’s begins. This very pale pink is perfect as pink tinged daylight begins. Heads above the clouds, the two goddesses rise from a swirl of circular spiraling puffs that appear almost flower-like in appearance - a depiction of clouds I have never seen before. Set in a simple 14KT mounting, this shell cameo curves, giving the illusion that the goddesses are breaking out of the clouds. There is a C clasp closure with a slightly extended pin stem. Soft, delicate and beguiling, this cameo is very subtle and lady-like.

Condition: Excellent. A few fine striations on the sides, not visually significant.
Size: 2” high, 1 3/4" wide, 1/2" deep.
