HEAVENLY RULERS OF THE GODS ( Victorian Jewelry Cameo Brooch / Pendant ): Zeus and his wife Hera, the royal couple, are the subjects of this splendid Victorian hand carved shell Cameo. (c. 1850-70) Zeus was the supreme god in the Greek pantheon and all were subject to his rule. In this masterful carving he wears a crown of olive leaves and is accompanied by his wife, Hera, the Queen of Olympus . She wears her royal diadem signifying her roles as Queen of Heaven and a marriage divinity. Hera was the protector of marriage, children and families. Carved beneath the royal couple, surrounded by clouds, are the eagle – symbol of the strength and power of Zeus – and Hermes (Mercury) the Divine Herald of the gods. The son of Zeus, Hermes wore a petasus (brimmed winged hat) and golden winged sandals. He carried a caduceus, a staff of entwined serpents – symbol of the messenger of peace and prosperity. (The caduceus also became the physician’s symbol.) This magnificent Cameo carving is a small masterpiece of the carver’s art – remarkable for its detail and use of the natural coloring of the shell. Bezel set in a gold filled ribbon twist frame setting, with a swivel pendant hook and a replacement gold filled safety clasp closure on the back. This outstanding Antique Cameo is a collector’s dream. Condition: Excellent. One insignificant natural stress mark, mainly hidden by the back of the head of Zeus. Size: 2 3/8” high, 2” wide, 3/8” deep.
