ETERNAL LOVE FOR THE SOUL ( Edwardian Jewelry Shell Cameo Pin / Pendant ): This luscious Edwardian (1910-1919) hand carved Shell Cameo portrays Psyche, the bride of Eros (Cupid). The butterfly wings in her hair are a sure fire mark of identity. Psyche in Greek means both “soul” and “butterfly” – the soul was seen as a butterfly which left the body after death. Aphrodite, jealous of the mortal Psyche’s beauty, ordered Eros to punish her - but he pricked himself with his own arrow and fell in love with her. After many trials and torments, Zeus gave permission for the two to marry and Psyche became an immortal. The soul found eternal love. In this deep and crisp carving, Psyche wears her butterfly wings in her hair. Earlier versions show the wings on her shoulders. Notice how well the Cameo carver has used the natural coloration of the shell to accent her hair. Curls, ringlets and even two roses form an elaborate hairstyle. Her profile is handsome and well formed and she even wears a graduated string of beads around her neck. Wonderful detail, yet the entire large Cameo remains in perfect proportion and harmony. The 10KT gold setting is lacy and delicate with small rosettes at each of the four compass points, as well as on the hinged bale. The clasp (marked 10KT) has an early safety catch. This Psyche Cameo is versatile – acting as both a pin and a pendant, yet graceful and feminine in its appeal. It would look wonderful on a string of pearls! It becomes more and more difficult to find pieces of this quality. Condition: Excellent. A few striations at the top of her head seen only under magnification. Size: 2 3/4” high (without the bale), 2” wide, 1/2” deep at the head.
