PLINY’S DOVES ( Victorian Shell Cameo Brooch ): This charming shell cameo showing four doves perched on the edge of a bowl drinking and preening is based on the famous ancient Italian mosaic called "Pliny’s Doves". The Roman scholar, Pliny the Elder, historian and naturalist among many intellectual pursuits, was a great admirer of this image by the artist, Sosus. Especially well carved to take advantage of the rusty colored top layer of shell, the cameo is held in its elaborate setting by multiple tiny prongs. Surrounding the cameo is a gold-filled stamped wreath of flowers and leaves of remarkable depth and complexity. The back view shows the original C clasp fastening and safety chain and pin. The cameo has a lightness and delicacy which probably dates it to 1890 to 1915. Condition: Excellent. No stress marks in the cameo and no flaws or repairs to the mounting. Size: 2" wide, 1 5/8" high.
