CUP BEARER TO THE GODS ( Victorian Shell Cameo Brooch ): In this glorious example of masterful carving, the Greek goddess, Hebe, is shown giving water to her father Zeusí eagle. A favorite subject for the bas-relief artistry of Victorian shell cameos, this huge English brooch exhibits a particularly graceful composition and exquisite detail. The gradations of depth enable the shadings of color in the shell to enhance the sculptural quality of the carving. It almost appears that an artistís brush strokes were applied to give the carving a light, ethereal, wind-swept appearance. Dating from about 1860, the classic scroll work embellished setting is done in 18KT gold with the original C clasp pin back. Such an impressive cameo! Condition: Excellent. Very light wear. a few striations in the shell under the eagles wing only visible when held up to light. 3 1/4" high, 2 3/4" wide. Setting 3/8" at top and bottom.
