CURIOSITY FOR CAMEO LOVERS ( Victorian Shell Cameo Pin / Pendant ): This highly unusual and beautifully carved shell cameo is an idiosyncratic combination of symbols, unique in my experience. Within a graceful swirling border sits a semi-nude female figure, likely to represent Venus, the goddess of love. Venus is frequently depicted with her son, Cupid, as a winged baby; but here, instead of one Cupid, Venus is surrounded by three playful putti or cherubs, carved with butterfly wings rather than the standard bird wings. It is placed in a very unusual heavy double silver setting. The inner frame is edged with a rope twist and then prong set into a second frame of foliate filigree. It is marked "800" silver and fastens with a safety catch used in the early years of the twentieth century. There is a swivel bail that enables you to wear the cameo as a pendant. The cameo carving itself is probably somewhat older, perhaps late 1800ís. Condition: Excellent. No cracks or stress marks. Size of entire brooch 2 3/8" high, 2" wide. Size of cameo 1 3/4" high, 1 1/4" wide.
